Paint Hide is hide-and-seek with a paintbrush. You are a little chameleon in a yard of coloured patches: pick a spot, tap a paint pot to take on the colour of the floor under you and keep perfectly still while the seeker robots sweep their torches around. Three other chameleons are hiding too. If you like Hide and Paint or MECCHA CHAMELEON, you know the game.

Paint-to-hide games are one of the freshest twists on hide-and-seek. Hide and Paint sits among the most played games on Poki, and MECCHA CHAMELEON climbed from one country to fourteen in a few days this autumn. Paint Hide brings the idea to the browser as a quick single-player level game: no lobby, no waiting, just you, three rival chameleons and a few robots with torches.

Every level starts with a few seconds of grace while the seekers count with their eyes shut. Run to a good patch, tap the pot of the matching colour and freeze. When a torch beam passes over you, the seeker only notices you if your colour is different from the patch under you, or if you are moving. Crates block the beams, so ducking behind one is always smart. Stay hidden until the clock at the top runs out to clear the level.

It gets trickier as you go. Later yards have more colours, more seekers that walk their rounds or sweep their beams in place, and patches that blink from one colour to the next every few seconds — sit on one of those and you'll have to repaint in time or move away. The other chameleons hide too, and you can watch the seekers find them one by one. Stars are for close calls: finish without a seeker ever getting suspicious for all three.

Found? A short video lets you keep hiding once a level, with a couple of seconds of safety. After a win, a video buys a longer head start for the next level. Paint Hide runs on desktop, phone and tablet, saves your level and stars in the browser, and the leaderboard ranks the best hiders. The first yard has just two colours and one seeker, and the hand shows you which pot to tap, so you learn the trick in seconds.
