Sand Drop Online

Sand Drop is a bright little puzzle about jars full of sand pictures — a sunset, rolling dunes, a tiny pixel heart — and the empty trays waiting underneath. Slide a tray under its colour, watch the sand come pouring down, and empty every jar before the time bar runs out. One drag to learn, five hundred levels to finish.

Every jar holds a picture laid down in coloured sand, and the sand only goes one place: into a tray of the same colour, straight from the bottom of the jar. Drag a red tray under a jar with red at the bottom and the red pours out. The picture above it slumps down, a new colour reaches the floor, and now it wants a different tray. Fill a tray to the brim and it pops off the board to make room.

The real puzzle is the floor. Trays are chunky shapes — bars, corners, little squares — sliding on a grid between walls, and they get in each other's way. The tray you need is behind the one you parked a moment ago, the corridor to the second jar is exactly one cell too narrow, and the order you empty things in decides whether the last colour can get where it needs to go.

A time bar sits at the top of the screen, and it starts with your first move, so there is always a calm moment to look before you touch anything. Several trays can pour at once, which is where the good players find their time: park one, go and fetch the next, and let the sand do the work while you plan.

Five hundred levels climb from a single jar and a single tray to crowded boards with several jars, stacked pictures and walls in the way. The difficulty rises steadily through the first fifty or so, then comes in waves — after a hard stretch the next level gives you a breather before things build up again. Every level has been played through to the end, so a tricky board is always a puzzle, never a dead end.

Mostly, though, it is lovely to watch. Thousands of grains tumble and slide, the picture sags as its bottom drains away, streams of sand hiss down into the trays, and the first pour of every new colour lands with a satisfying thump. Soft colours on a light board, nothing flashing at you.

It is made for the small gaps in a day. A level takes a minute or two, it plays one-handed in portrait on a phone, and your progress is saved automatically, so you come back to exactly the level you left.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sand Drop free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser on desktop, phone and tablet — no download and no sign-up.

How do I win a level?

Empty every jar before the time bar at the top runs out. Sand only pours into a tray of its own colour, so each colour needs its tray brought underneath.

Why is the sand not pouring into my tray?

The colour at the bottom of the jar has to match the tray. If the bottom layer is a different colour, bring that tray first; the one you are holding will get its turn when its colour reaches the floor.

Can the sand pour into two trays at once?

Yes. Every tray under a jar with its colour at the bottom fills at the same time, and it is the fastest way through a level.

When does the timer start?

With your first move. Until you touch a tray the clock stands still, so take a moment to look at the board.

What happens when the time runs out?

You can start the level again. Sometimes you will also be offered a few extra seconds for watching a short video, and then the board stays exactly as you left it.

How many levels are there?

Five hundred. The first two show you how to play with a guiding hand, and every one of them has been played through to the end.

Does it get harder?

Steadily over the first fifty or so levels, then in waves: a hard stretch is followed by an easier level before it builds up again.

Is my progress saved?

Automatically, after every level you finish. Come back later and you land on the level where you stopped.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes — it is built for portrait on a phone and plays one-handed. It works just as well with a mouse.

How do I turn the sound off?

Use the sound button next to the game. The game remembers the setting.
