Pixel Riddle is a nonogram — also called picross or paint by numbers — built out of little 3D blocks. The numbers beside each row and above each column tell you how the filled cells run in that line; fill the right ones and a hidden pixel picture appears, turns to full colour and tips up to show itself off.

Each number is a run of filled cells in that row or column, in order, with at least one empty cell between runs. A row marked 3 1 has a run of three, a gap, then a single cell. Put the rows and columns together and there is only one picture that fits them all.

Every picture can be worked out from the numbers alone. Before a puzzle is used, a solver that only looks at one line at a time — exactly what a person does — must be able to finish it, which also means the answer is unique.

Painting is quick: press on a cell and drag along its row or column to fill a whole run in one stroke, or switch to the cross to rule cells out. When a line has all its filled cells, its numbers grey out and the rest of the line is crossed for you.

The first picture teaches itself: one line at a time lights up, its numbers pulse, a single sentence says why those cells must be filled, and a hand shows the drag — all the way to the finished heart. On every later level the bulb does the same for the next line you can work out, if you get stuck; a picture solved without it and without mistakes earns three stars.

You have three hearts. A cell painted wrong costs one and shows what it really is; lose all three and the picture starts over. A picture with no mistakes earns three stars.

Levels is an endless ladder: small 5×5 pictures to learn on — a heart, a house, a tree — then 8×8 animals and objects, then 10×10, and past the picture book, mirrored pixel sprites. Finished pictures turn from ink blue into their real colours with a wave.

The board and the blocks are drawn in 3D in the browser, so there is nothing to install. The game is sized for a phone held upright and plays with a mouse too.

How to play Pixel Riddle

Fill the cells the numbers describe and reveal the picture:

Desktop: Click and drag to paint; the row and column under the mouse are highlighted. Escape returns to the menu.
Mobile: Tap or drag with a finger; switch fill and cross with the round buttons under the grid.
