Comb Sort is a hexagon sorting puzzle with one rule you learn in about four seconds: colors that touch, stick together. Take a stack of colored tiles from the tray, drop it anywhere on the honeycomb, and the board sorts itself — matching tiles slide across to their own kind, and when ten of a color pile up they lift off for good. Then you look at what is left and decide where the next stack goes.

The whole hexa sort genre rests on one little pleasure, and Comb Sort is built around it: the move you make is small, and the thing that happens is big. You place a three-tile stack in an empty cell of the comb, and if its top color touches a neighbour of the same color, those tiles slide across on their own. That uncovers whatever was underneath, which may match something else, which slides too — one placement can unzip half the board while you sit there and watch.

Ten is the magic number. When ten tiles of one color end up stacked on top of each other they fly off the honeycomb and count towards the level goal, usually about three hundred tiles. Nothing else scores, so the whole game is about herding colors into piles tall enough to pop, in a space that keeps getting more crowded as more colors join.

The board grows with you. Cells start locked with a number printed on them — that is how many tiles you need to have cleared before the cell opens — so the comb you finish a level on is wider than the one you started with. Clearing early is worth more than it looks: it buys room, and room is the only currency in a sorting puzzle.

From level eight there is wood, which loses a layer whenever a stack clears in the cell beside it, and from level fifteen there is ice, which melts the same way. Both show up as their own goals in the bar at the top, so a level can ask for three hundred tiles and two blocks of ice, and the tidy route through it is rarely the same as the fast one.

Difficulty here lives in the colors, not in a clock. A level opens with three colors and simple two-color stacks in the tray; as your cleared count climbs, a fourth color appears, then a fifth, and so on up to eight. The board you were comfortably managing quietly gets busier under your hands — that is the entire curve. There is no timer, no move limit, no lives and no energy bar: the game waits as long as you want to think, and a lost level costs nothing but the tap to start it again.

It is a browser game in the plain sense: it opens in a tab on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, it remembers where you were, and it needs no account, no install and no permission. Comb Sort was written from scratch by crokocat game studio — the tiles, the sounds and the levels are all ours.

How do you play a hexa sort puzzle?

You drag a stack of colored tiles from the tray onto an empty hexagon. Tiles of the same color merge with the neighbouring stack on their own, and ten of one color on top of a stack disappear. The goal is to clear the number of tiles shown at the top of the screen.

Why do the tiles move on their own?

That is the sorting rule, and it is the whole game. When two neighbouring stacks have the same color on top, the shorter run slides onto the taller one. A single placement can set off a long chain of those moves, which is where the big clears come from.

How many tiles do I have to clear?

The number in the top bar is the goal for that level — usually around three hundred. The bar underneath fills as you clear, so you can always see how close you are.

What are the numbers on the grey hexagons?

Those are locked cells, and the number is how many tiles you need to have cleared before that cell opens. The honeycomb gets bigger as the level goes on.

How do I break the wooden tiles?

Clear a stack in a cell next to the wood. Each clear takes one layer off it. Wooden tiles start appearing around level eight and count as their own level goal.

How do I melt the ice?

The same way as wood: clear a stack in the neighbouring cell and the ice melts in one go, freeing the tiles frozen under it. Ice starts around level fifteen.

What happens when the board fills up?

If there is no empty cell left for the stacks in the tray, the level is over. You can free up the three tallest stacks and carry on, or start the level again. Your progress through the game is never lost.

How many levels are there?

Levels are generated rather than hand-built, so there is no last one. They get harder in a steady way: more colors, tighter thresholds, and blockers from level eight onwards.

Is there a timer or a move limit?

Neither. Comb Sort has no clock, no move counter, no lives and no energy — you can think about a placement for as long as you like, and a lost level costs you nothing but the tap to restart it.

Does my progress save?

Yes. The game remembers the level you are on, the total tiles you have cleared and your longest chain, right in the browser. Come back a week later and it opens where you left off.

Can I play Comb Sort on my phone?

Yes — it is built portrait-first for one thumb, and works the same in a mobile browser as on desktop. No app store, no install.

What is the longest chain possible?

There is no cap. A well-placed stack on a crowded board can cascade through half the comb and clear several colors in a row; the main menu keeps your best chain so far.
