Bearoff is backgammon and long nardy on a chunky 3D board that lies lengthwise on your phone. Roll the dice, race your fifteen checkers home and bear them off before the other side does — against a bot that sharpens with every level, or against a friend on one device.

In backgammon you move toward your home at the bottom while the other side comes the opposite way. Two checkers make a point nobody can land on; a single checker is a blot that can be hit and sent to the bar, from where it has to come back in before anything else moves.

Long nardy — the favourite in Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia — sends both sides the same way round from opposite corners. There is no hitting and you can never land where the other side stands, so the game is about racing and building walls; only one checker may leave the head each turn, except for a first 6-6, 4-4 or 3-3, and six points in a row may not shut the other side in completely.

Both dice must be used when they can be, and a double is played four times; if only one die fits, the larger one must be played. The game works out every legal play for you, shows where each checker may go, and moves a checker straight away when it has only one place to go.

The bot weighs the race, the points it holds, walls and exposed blots; the first levels play loosely, the later ones hardly waste a pip. Wins by a wide margin earn more stars; the bulb, which shows the strongest play, costs one.

Undo takes back a step of your own turn at any time before the turn ends — so you can try a play and change your mind.

The pills at the top show each side's pip count: the total distance still to go.

Be the first to bear off all fifteen checkers:

Desktop: Click the dice button (or press Space) to roll, then click checkers and dots. Ctrl+Z takes back a step.
Mobile: Tap the dice button, then checkers and dots. Hold the phone upright — the board lies lengthwise.
