Four Up Online

Four Up is connect four as a toy: a blue rack standing on two feet, red and yellow discs that fall down the column you pick and land with a clack. Line up four of your colour — across, up or diagonally — before the other side does, and when a game is over the slider opens and every disc drops out of the bottom.

The rules take a sentence. Players take turns dropping a disc into one of the columns; it falls to the lowest free hole. The first to have four of their colour in an unbroken line — horizontal, vertical or diagonal — wins. Fill the rack with no line of four and it is a draw.

Levels is an endless ladder against the computer. The first two racks are a small six by five to learn on, against an opponent that still leaves doors open. From level three you play the classic seven by six. The computer looks further ahead as you climb, always takes a win it can see, and never becomes perfect — every level can be beaten.

The ladder changes the rack itself. Some levels put grey pegs in the bottom holes, mirrored left and right: discs rest on a peg, but no line of four can run through it, so the familiar opening squares suddenly behave differently. Every fifth level from ten is a wider eight by seven rack with more room for threats.

Win a level and earn one to three stars depending on how few discs you needed — nine or fewer is three stars. The highest level you reach goes on the leaderboard. Lose or draw and you replay the same rack.

Two players is the classic game for two people on one phone, tablet or laptop: the seven by six rack, no computer, and the pill at the top lifted for whoever moves next.

The rack, the discs and the pegs are drawn in 3D in the browser, so there is nothing to install; the game is sized for a phone held upright and plays the same with a mouse.

How to play Four Up

Get four of your colour in a row before the other side does:

Desktop: Move the mouse over a column — the disc hovers there — and click to drop it. Escape returns to the menu.
Mobile: Tap anywhere over a column. Hold the phone upright.
