Code Quote is a cryptogram: a well-known saying written in code, where every number stands for one letter. A few letters are given — work out the rest, letter by letter, until the whole saying appears. If you play Cryptogram, Figgerits or the Word Finder cryptogram puzzles, you will feel at home right away.

Cryptograms are one of the oldest word puzzles around. Newspapers have run a daily cryptoquote for decades, puzzle books fill whole volumes with them, and on phones the idea is bigger than ever: Easybrain's Cryptogram, Figgerits and new arrivals such as Word Finder: Cryptogram Puzzle keep climbing the word-game charts. Code Quote brings the same puzzle to your browser, free, with nothing to install.

Each level is a familiar English saying — from 'Practice makes perfect' to 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step'. Every letter is replaced by a number from 1 to 26, with a fresh key on every level. Some letters are already shown. Tap a cell, pick a letter: if it is right, every cell with that number fills in at once, so one good guess can open half the sentence. The keyboard greys out the letters already placed, which narrows the choices as you go.

The fun is in the reasoning. Short words give themselves away — a one-letter word is almost always A or I, a three-letter word ending a sentence is often THE or AND, and a letter that doubles inside a word is likely an L, an S, an E or an O. Pattern by pattern, the code cracks. But be careful: a wrong letter costs a heart, and three wrong letters end the level. Solve without a mistake to earn all three stars.

The first levels are short sayings with many letters shown, and the puzzles grow longer and barer as you climb. A bulb reveals a letter when you are stuck; your stock of bulbs carries over between levels, and a short video refills it or buys one more heart when you run out. Code Quote runs on desktop, phone and tablet, your level and stars are saved in the browser, and the leaderboard ranks the highest levels reached.

Frequently asked questions

Is Code Quote free to play?

Yes. Code Quote is free on crokocat with no download and no sign-up — it runs in your browser on desktop, phone and tablet.

What is a cryptogram?

A sentence written in a simple code where each letter is replaced by a symbol — here a number from 1 to 26. You find the original letters to read the sentence.

Is Code Quote like Figgerits or Cryptogram?

Yes, it plays on the same idea: numbers stand for letters and you decode a saying. Code Quote is a separate game by crokocat, built for quick levels in the browser.

What happens when I enter a wrong letter?

You lose a heart. After three wrong letters the level ends; a short video can give you one more heart, once per level.

Does a right letter fill all matching cells?

Yes. Every cell with the same number fills in at once.

What are the sayings?

Traditional English proverbs and common sayings, such as 'Look before you leap' or 'Many hands make light work'.

How do hints work?

The bulb reveals one letter — the one in the selected cell, or the one that opens the most cells. You start with three, they carry over between levels, and a video refills them.
