Invaders는 아케이드 기기 한 대를 통째로 브라우저 탭에 넣었습니다. 발을 맞춰 행진하는 외계인 55마리, 부서져 가는 방어벽 네 개, 미스터리 UFO까지 전부 주사선과 깜빡임, 이따금 튀는 노이즈가 있는 웅웅거리는 가상 CRT 위에 그려집니다.
1978년, 게임 하나가 지구 곳곳의 지갑을 비우고 오늘날 우리가 아는 최고 점수라는 개념을 만들어 냈습니다. 이것은 그 기계를 향한 애정 어린 재현이에요. 규칙만이 아니라 감각까지 담았습니다. 인광 초록빛 포대, 좌우로 발을 옮기는 각진 흰 외계인들, 그리고 이 한 발을 쏠 만한지 고민하는 사이 화면 위쪽을 울며 지나가는 붉은 미스터리 함선까지요.
원작을 돌아가게 만든 디테일이 전부 살아 있습니다. 다섯 줄로 늘어선 침략자 55마리, 줄마다 다른 점수. 수가 줄어들수록 대열은 빨라지고, 마지막 한 마리는 전력 질주합니다. 포대는 한 번에 한 발만 쏠 수 있어요. 빗나가면 총알이 화면을 벗어날 때까지 기다리는 동안에도 폭탄은 계속 떨어집니다. 방어벽 네 개가 나를 가려 주지만, 양쪽에서 오는 사격에 픽셀 단위로 깎여 나가다가 결국 행진해 오는 벽에 짓뭉개집니다.
게임을 둘러싼 것은 기계 그 자체입니다. 빛나는 간판과 동전 투입구, 실제로 눌리는 버튼이 달린 기기, 그리고 브라운관처럼 구는 화면이죠. 주사선, 흐르는 리트레이스 띠, 은은한 깜빡임, 폭발할 때 터지는 노이즈까지 있습니다. 브라우저 탭이 어둑한 오락실에 서 있는 것에 가장 가까워지는 순간이에요.
웨이브가 시작될 때마다 외계인은 조금씩 더 낮고 조금씩 더 사납게 나타나고, 유일한 결말은 침공입니다. 그때나 지금이나 목표는 화면 위쪽의 하이스코어 줄, 그리고 크레딧 한 번 더입니다.
Invaders 하는 법
1978년 이후로 할 일은 바뀌지 않았습니다. 한 발씩 쏘아 침공을 막으세요.
- 화면 아래에서 포대를 좌우로 움직이며 행진하는 외계인을 쏘세요.
- 내 총알은 화면에 한 번에 하나만 있을 수 있습니다. 한 발 한 발이 중요해요.
- 맨 아래 줄 외계인은 10점, 중간 줄은 20점, 맨 위 줄은 30점이고, 붉은 UFO는 50~300점의 복불복입니다.
- 방어벽 네 개 뒤에 숨으세요. 양쪽에서 오는 사격에 무너지고, 외계인들이 뚫고 내려옵니다.
- 침략자 55마리를 모두 없애면 다음 웨이브가 시작되고 더 낮고 더 빠르게 나타납니다. 바닥에 닿으면 끝이에요.
컴퓨터: 방향키나 A/D로 이동, Space로 발사, P로 일시정지.
모바일: 화면 아래 기기 버튼을 쓰세요. LEFT / RIGHT를 누르고 있으면 이동하고, FIRE를 탭하면 발사됩니다.
Invaders 팁
- 방어벽 하나에 좁은 구멍을 뚫고 그 사이로 저격하세요. 그 전설적인 요령은 지금도 통합니다.
- 양쪽 끝 열부터 없애세요. 대열은 가장 바깥쪽 외계인을 기준으로 튕기므로, 가장자리를 다듬으면 하강 속도가 느려집니다.
- 총알 한 발을 허공에 날리지 마세요. 빗나가면 1초 동안 완전히 무방비가 됩니다.
- UFO의 점수는 도박이지만, 대열이 아직 높이 있을 때 노리면 거의 공짜나 다름없습니다.
- 막판에는 쏘기 전에 마지막 외계인의 리듬을 익히세요. 게임에서 가장 빠르게 움직이니까요.
