Digging games like Core Drill: where to go after the core

If you finished a Core Drill mine and want more of the same feeling, there are two things you may be missing: the dig-sell-upgrade loop, or the simple pleasure of clearing a space bit by bit. This list covers both. Core Drill is the closest match to Motherload, and the four games after it keep one half of that appeal: Deep Catch and Trim Time keep the upgrade loop, Arrow Digger and Sand Roll keep the digging. All five are free in your browser.

What makes a digging game hard to put down

Mining games run on a loop that is easy to describe and hard to stop: dig down, grab the treasure, come back, upgrade, dig deeper. Brainrot Miner climbed into the popular list on Poki within days of release, MegMiner and Ant Miners are among the hot new games on CrazyGames, and the old Flash classic Motherload is still remembered by everyone who played it.

Take that loop apart and two separate pleasures show up. One is progress you can feel: a bigger tank or a faster drill that lets you reach a depth you could not reach yesterday. The other is the physical satisfaction of removing material and watching a space open up. The games below are sorted by which of the two they give you.

Core Drill: the full loop, with a goal at the bottom

Core Drill is the direct answer if you want the Motherload loop in short levels. You drill straight down a shaft nine blocks wide, collect copper, silver, gold, rubies, emeralds and diamonds, and fetch the glowing core from the bottom before the fuel runs out. Ore is sold the moment you surface, and the coins buy three upgrades: Drill, Tank and Hold.

What sets it apart from an open-ended mine is the goal. Every level has a core to bring home, so a run has a clear finish and stars for the fuel you have left. Even a failed run moves you forward, because every coin you sold is banked.

Deep Catch: the same loop, underwater

Deep Catch keeps the descend, collect, upgrade, go deeper rhythm and swaps the drill for a fishing line. On the way down you dodge the fish; on the way up you catch them. You sell the haul and buy a longer line, a bigger hook and a better boat, then go deeper for rarer fish.

If the part of Core Drill you enjoyed was choosing what to upgrade next, this is the closest match. A longer line is the best first upgrade, because deep fish are worth many times the shallow ones. If you have played Tiny Fishing or Ridiculous Fishing, you already know the cast and dive, but here the dive is a dodging game, so skill buys depth before coins do.

Trim Time: upgrades and satisfying clean-up

Trim Time is a lawn-mowing game made to be satisfying: tall swaying grass, a little red ride-on mower and neat stubble behind the blade. Mow every tuft before the fuel runs out, earn a coin for each one and spend them on upgrades such as a wider blade or a faster engine.

The fuel idea will feel familiar from the mine. Fuel only burns while you move, so you can stop and plan whenever you like, and blade width saves the most fuel. Like Core Drill, running out of fuel keeps your coins, so you upgrade and try again.

Arrow Digger: dig out a figure, one cube at a time

Arrow Digger is the pick if you liked the clearing more than the shopping. It is a 3D block puzzle: a figure is built out of small cubes, each carrying one arrow. Tap a cube and it shoots out in the arrow direction, but only if the whole line ahead is empty.

There is no machine to steer, only the order of your taps. The best habit is to spin the figure first and tap second, because the cube that can actually move is often behind the one facing you.

Sand Roll: carve tunnels with your finger

Sand Roll is a dig-and-roll physics puzzle. A big hungry ball waits at the top of a box of rainbow sand, and little round critters hide in pockets below. Drag your finger through the sand to carve tunnels; whatever is free rolls down, and the ball gobbles every critter it touches.

It is the most hands-on of the five, because you dig with your own finger rather than steering a machine. Keep the tunnel steep, since balls stop on flat sand, and dig less sand for more stars.

Which one to try first

Want the upgrade loop: start with Deep Catch, then Trim Time. Want the satisfying clear-out: start with Sand Roll or Arrow Digger. Not sure which half you like? Play a few levels of Core Drill again with the other half in mind, and notice whether you look forward to the next shop or the next opening in the rock.
