There is no timer, so nothing rushes you. The run ends only when none of your remaining pieces fit anywhere, which means every game you lose is a game you talked yourself into.

The rule that turns it into a real puzzle is that pieces cannot be rotated. An L-shape stays an L-shape, so good play is planning rather than reacting — thinking about where the next hand of three will go before you spend the corner you are about to spend. Combos are where the score lives: consecutive clears are worth more than the last, and the preview glows to show which lines will blast before you commit. 2048 — the one-move puzzle nobody has really solved

2048 gives you exactly one move: slide the whole board up, down, left or right, and equal tiles fuse into their sum. Two 2s make a 4, two 4s make an 8, and the tile the game is named after sits a long way down that road.

What keeps it a puzzle rather than a swiping habit is that every slide also drops a new tile into a random empty cell. Sixteen cells is not many, and careless swiping fills them faster than you would believe. The players who reach 2048 are not the ones who merge the most — they are the ones who park their big tiles in a corner and never break formation without a reason. This version keeps the 2014 original's rules, including the 90/10 spawn odds and the option to keep playing after you win.

Royal Jelly Jam — the block-jam hit, minus the install

Royal Jelly Jam is the browser answer to Color Block Jam: a board packed with colored jelly blocks, gates of matching colors set into the edges, and a clock. Drag a block toward the gate of its own color and it slides across and melts through. Empty the board before time runs out and the level is done.

The puzzle hides in the traffic. A block only slides along an open lane, so the real question is always which one to send out first — pick wrong and you wall yourself off with no legal move left. Later levels add covers that hide a block's color until you reach it, buttons and rails that open and close routes, gates that toggle after each delivery, and blocks locked together so they move as one. With more than 1,800 hand-made levels plus a hint, an undo and a shuffle, this is the one here most likely to eat an evening.

Find the Sheep — for when you want to actually think

Find the Sheep is the one on this list that is pure deduction rather than dexterity or planning. The pasture is split into colored regions, and three rules govern the flock: one sheep per color, one per row and column, and no two sheep touching, not even at the corners. If you have been playing Queens or star battle puzzles, you already know the shape of it.

Those three rules interlock further than they look. A narrow color squeezed into a single row claims that whole row; every sheep you find clears its row, column, color and neighbouring tiles in one sweep; and some tiles are impossible for a sneakier reason — a sheep there would leave a nearby color with nowhere to live. You mark an ✕ wherever a sheep cannot be, free and unlimited, and reveal only when the logic is finished, because a wrong reveal costs a heart and resets the board. Every board is checked before you see it: the solution is unique, and a step-by-step solver can reach it without a single guess. Grids run from a friendly 4x4 up to a brain-bending 8x8.

Gem Sort and UnTile — the two calm ones

Gem Sort is the sorting puzzle in its classic form: flasks of mixed-up gems, two empty ones, and a single rule — a gem lands only on a matching color or in an empty flask. Fill a flask with four of a kind and it locks in. The trap every sort-puzzle veteran knows is the empty flask: spend your free space carelessly and the board freezes. Undo here is free and unlimited, and every level is verified by a solver before it reaches you, so being stuck always has a way out.

UnTile is the odd one out and the most charming. Crews of worker ants take a pixel-art picture apart tile by tile: tap the front box of a queue, its crew takes one of five stands, and the ants carry off tiles of their color — but only tiles with a clear straight path to the picture's edge. The picture peels from the outside in, so the order of your taps is the entire puzzle. Send a color that is still buried and the crew stands there holding a stand hostage; jam all five and the level is lost. No timer, nothing to dodge, and over 260 pictures behind the ants.
