Sorting beats stacking
Melon Merge runs a ladder of ten fruits — cherry, strawberry, grape, orange, apple, lemon, peach, pineapple, melon and finally the watermelon. Two identical fruits that touch become the next fruit up, and bigger merges score more. So every fruit you drop is either joining a group or becoming an obstacle, and there is no third option.
This is why sorting matters more than clever aiming. A jar with all the small fruit clustered on one side merges constantly without your help: cherries find cherries, the resulting strawberries are already neighbours, and a single drop can set off a chain that clears a quarter of the pile. A jar where sizes alternate is a jar full of walls — a lone orange wedged between two apples keeps those apples apart for the rest of the run.
Practical version of the rule: before you drop, look for the fruit that matches what you are holding, and drop as close to it as you can. If there is no match on the board, drop it at the edge of the group of similar-sized fruit rather than into open space in the middle.
Big fruit lives against the wall
The second habit is spatial. Big fruits are worth big points and take up enormous room, and a melon sitting in the centre of the jar splits your board in two — everything on the left can never reach anything on the right. Keep the large fruit against one side and build outward from there, so the ladder runs roughly from biggest at one wall to smallest at the other.
This is the same instinct that carries players in 2048, where the entire game is keeping your largest tile locked in a corner and never breaking formation. The jar is messier than a four-by-four grid because physics keeps nudging things, but the principle survives: a big object in the middle is a wall, a big object at the edge is a foundation.
One side effect worth knowing — once your watermelon or melon is settled at a wall, resist the urge to drop new fruit on top of it. Height is what kills runs, and the tallest column in the jar is almost always the one built on your biggest fruit.
Think one merge ahead
The game shows you the next fruit before you drop it, and that preview is the difference between reacting and planning. Dropping a grape next to two other grapes is not one merge — it is a grape becoming an orange next to your existing orange, which becomes an apple, and so on up the pile. Chains are where the big scores come from, and they are set up two drops earlier.
So read the jar in pairs. A lone fruit is a liability; a pair is a merge waiting for a third; a trio is a chain waiting for a nudge. When you are holding something with no partner on the board, park it where its future partner will be easy to place — usually next to fruit one step up or one step down the ladder, never in the middle of a group of much larger fruit.
Let the physics work for you
Real 2D physics runs the jar: fruits roll, settle, lean on each other and tumble into gaps. That means every drop rearranges the pile, and a merge that shrinks two fruits into one leaves a hole that everything above it falls into. Cascades happen because of gravity, not because the game decided to be generous.
You can use this. A round fruit dropped onto a sloped pile will roll downhill, so aiming slightly uphill from your target often lands the fruit exactly where you want it. It also cuts the other way: a careless drop onto a slope can roll a cherry across the whole jar and wedge it somewhere useless. When the pile is uneven, drop into a valley rather than onto a peak.
The same physics is why clearing the bottom of the jar matters so much. Merge low and the whole pile settles down a level; merge high and you have only moved the problem around.
The red line is the only real enemy
A run ends when a fruit comes to rest above the red line at the top of the jar. Not when it touches the line in passing — when it settles there. That distinction is worth internalising, because a fruit that briefly pops above the line while the pile is shifting is not a loss, and panicking about it usually causes the loss.
What is dangerous is the slow version: the pile creeping upward, drop after drop, while you keep adding fruit that has no partner. The moment the line starts flashing, change goals completely. Stop building the ladder and start merging downward — take any merge available near the bottom of the jar, even a small one, because each merge removes an object and lowers the whole pile.
The other rule that saves runs: do not chase a merge across the jar with a risky drop. A missed throw near the top, aimed at a partner on the far side, is how most good runs actually end. If the safe drop and the clever drop disagree when the jar is nearly full, take the safe one.
What happens when two watermelons meet
The watermelon sits at the top of the ladder, and reaching it is the moment most players are chasing. It is not the end of the run, though — the jar keeps going, and the watermelon becomes the largest object you now have to manage.
When two watermelons finally touch, they vanish in a burst of fireworks and hand you a large bonus. That is the rarest event in the game and the reason experienced players keep going after their first melon instead of playing loose. It also explains the wall rule from earlier: two watermelons can only meet if both were built along the same side, with nothing large jammed between them.
A run takes about five minutes. Deciding you are done takes considerably longer — which is the honest reason this mechanic became one of the most-watched games in the world after a small Japanese physics puzzle popularised it in late 2023.
