Swarm Out tips: upgrade picks and habits that survive the blob swarm

The short version: in Swarm Out you never stop moving, you take orbs and the shock ring early, and you grab crystals while the swarm is still thin so you level up before the rush. Those habits carry over to any Vampire Survivors-style game, because the whole genre comes down to two decisions: where you walk and which card you pick. This guide covers both, in the order a level throws them at you, from the first crystals to the big crowned blob at the end of the clock.

Move first, think second

Your gear fires on its own, so your only real input is steering. The most common way to lose a heart is running in a straight line away from the swarm: the blobs keep coming from every side, and a straight retreat ends at a wall with the crowd right behind you. Circle instead. Walk a wide loop around the swarm and it stretches into a line behind you, which leaves clear space ahead.

You have five hearts, and a touch from a blob costs one, followed by a short blink of safety. Treat that blink as a bonus, not a plan. It is there to get you out of a corner, so use it to slip through the gap rather than to push deeper into the crowd.

On a phone, drag anywhere on the screen and a stick appears under your finger, so there is no need to aim for a fixed button. On a keyboard, arrow keys or WASD do the same job. Small, steady movements are easier to control than big swings.

Crystals and the level bar

Every blob you pop leaves a cyan crystal, and walking over crystals fills the level bar. Each time the bar fills you level up and the action stops for an upgrade choice. That makes crystals the real currency of a run: more crystals sooner means more cards sooner, and cards are what keep you ahead of the swarm.

The best time to collect them is early, while the swarm is thin and the crystals lie where the blobs fell. Later the crowd is thick and every crystal sits in a risky spot. Pick up the ones that are safe, and do not dive into a pack for one that is not. A magnet upgrade helps here, because it pulls crystals in from further away, so you can stay out of the middle and still level up.

Which upgrades to pick first

Each level-up offers three cards. The pool is: Blaster (more shots, then piercing), Orbs that circle you, Shock (a ring that pulses out from the robot), Speed, Magnet, Rapid (faster firing) and Heal. No single card is a trap, but some are worth more at certain moments.

Orbs are a strong early pick. They spin around you and knock blobs away, so they protect you from every side at once, which a forward-firing blaster cannot do. Take the shock ring before the green tanks show up: it pushes the crowd back, and slow, tough blobs are exactly the ones you want pushed away rather than stacked against you.

Blaster upgrades are the steady choice for popping blobs faster, and Rapid makes every shot count more often. Speed is easy to underrate: it makes circling easier and lets you reach crystals before the swarm closes. Keep Heal for when you are low on hearts rather than taking it at full health, if the other two cards on offer are useful.

Know the swarm: grunts, runners and tanks

The swarm grows as the clock runs, and each type changes how you should move. Purple grunts come first and are the easy ones. Quick pink runners follow, and they close the distance fast, so give them room and do not let them pin you against an edge. Slow green tanks soak up hits, so a build that only pops small blobs will struggle once they arrive.

The answer is to have both area damage and crowd control in place before the tanks show up. Orbs and the shock ring do both jobs without any extra aiming, and the blaster upgrades handle the single big target. If you notice your build is thin when the first tanks arrive, spend your next cards on whatever covers that gap.

Beating the big blob

When the clock runs out, the spawning stops and a big crowned blob arrives. Popping it clears the level. Its touch costs two hearts, not one, so this is the moment to leave yourself room to dodge. Do not hug a wall: keep the middle of the arena open so you can circle it the same way you circled the swarm.

Because no new blobs are coming, you can take the fight slowly. Stay out of its reach, let the orbs, ring and blaster work, and step aside when it gets close. Stars are for finishing with your hearts intact, so a patient boss fight is also where you earn them.

If you get overrun

Losing all your hearts ends the level. A short video can revive you once per level with full hearts and a cleared space around you, which is worth using if you are close to the big blob. After a win, a video also buys a head start: an extra upgrade card at the start of the next level. Both are optional, and the game saves your level and stars in the browser, so you can pick up where you left off.

Swarm Out is free, needs no download and runs on desktop, phone and tablet. Fans of Vampire Survivors, Survivor.io, Archero and Bloons Blitz will find the same loop here in short levels: steer, collect, choose a card, repeat.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best upgrades in Swarm Out?

Orbs and the Shock ring are strong early picks because they protect you from every side and push the crowd back. Blaster, Rapid and Speed are steady follow-ups, and Heal is worth keeping for when your hearts are low.

How do I survive longer in Swarm Out?

Never stop moving, circle the swarm instead of running straight away, collect crystals while the swarm is thin so you level up before the rush, and pick upgrades that cover every side.

How do I beat the big blob?

Survive until the clock runs out, then keep the middle of the arena free and circle the crowned blob. Its touch costs two hearts, so give it room and let your orbs, ring and blaster do the work.

Do I have to aim or shoot in Swarm Out?

No. Your gear fires on its own. You only steer the robot and choose an upgrade card when you level up.

What happens when I lose all my hearts?

The level ends. A short video can revive you once per level with full hearts and a cleared space around you.

Is Swarm Out free to play?

Yes. Swarm Out is free on crokocat with no download and no sign-up, and it runs on desktop, phone and tablet.
